The 3rd annual Dan Fitzgerald Memorial Basketball Tournament, also known as “The Fitz,” honors the legacy of the longtime Gonzaga University Bulldog basketball coach. The Kalispel Tribe of Indians and Northern Quest Resort & Casino presents “The Fitz”, which will again be hosted by Lewis & Clark High School on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th. Participating teams this year from the Spokane remain the same as last year; Lewis and Clark, Mead, West Valley and Lake City from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Participating teams from outside the area this year include Moscow, ID, Mountain View, WA, West Valley of Yakima, WA and Archbishop Mitty from San Jose, CA.
The appearance of Archbishop Mitty this year is especially exciting. Mitty is the school where Coach Fitzgerald started his coaching career. A scholarship at Mitty, in Dan Fitzgerald’s name, is also one of the financial beneficiaries of the showcase tournament.
This year’s event marks the first time that girls teams will be involved in the Fitz. Local teams from Mead and Gonzaga Prep will be pitted against West Seattle and St. Mary’s, OR. St. Mary’s is headed by long time area coach Art Rojas. Girls’ games will be played on Friday at Gonzaga Prep and then they will join the boys at Lewis & Clark where all games will be played on Saturday.
Last year’s showcase was a huge competitive and financial success. The “showcase” format included out of area teams Blanchet, OR, Peninsula, WA, Lake Stevens, WA and a return visit from West Valley- Yakima. At the pre-tournament banquet, WV-Yakima Coach Jon Kinloch shared fond memories of playing for Coach Fitzgerald and the importance of the tournament honoring his college coach. Former Santa Clara head coach, and Fitz rival, Dick Davey also shared stories of the Fitz legacy. The keynote speaker of this year’s tip –off banquet will be former Gonzaga Player and current Vice Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of Washington, Dr. Ed Taylor.
Proceeds from last year’s tournament not only benefited the Dan Fitzgerald scholarship at Archbishop Mitty, but also the Spokane Boys and Girls Clubs of Spokane, Hoopfest Midnight Basketball, and the Greater Spokane League needy student fund. Additionally, the tournament partnered with the Second Harvest Food Bank to accept can food donations for admission to the event. Hundreds of pounds of food were collected during the two days and the event will be partnering again this year with the food bank.
This year SWX-Spokane will televise live two games on Friday. Radio Spokane (KGA 1510) will broadcast live two games on Saturday.
